My Idol

The lovely Vivien Dakpo is a Musical Worship coordinator at Open Baptist Church in Gaborone. Her singular goal in life is to learn what pleases the Lord and to do that smile emoticon It’s an exercise in faith, without which it is impossible to please Him.Her poem is entitled My Idol. Enjoy!

I lay my idol down

Spent too much time trying to appease this god

Met mornings with heart worship to the worthless

Afternoons singing praises to the deaf

My evenings consumed by sacrifices at a watery altar

I lay this idol down

I lay my idol down

This idol that would never lay itself down for me

This idol that could not suffer nor bleed

This idol that knows not of my existence

And cares nothing of my needs

I lay this idol down

I lay my idol down

This monster masquerading as godly intent

Consuming my heart, my soul, my mind

Eating at the shreds of my holiness

Feeding on the remnant of my willingness to fight

I lay this idol down

I lay this idol down

Wrestling with the principality that has replaced this innocence

Grappling with the power that has possessed my emptiness

Contending with the flesh that would obscure my clear thinking

I shrug off this idol, this demon, this rebellion

And with the nails that once pierced a true God,

I NAIL this idol down

With Love, VD
