Sadness at the passing nature of life first hit me at about fifteen years old. I was doing my Form 2 then, yet it still feels like yesterday. Heart aching. I had a sense of loss, thinking it would never be the same again without my great grandmother. For with that thought came the feeling that all is lost. Fun and laughter. Folk tales and memorable historical war stories were all lost. It is through her that I learnt about our Setswana culture. Stories about societal groups according to age and gender termed as “mephato”. I liked hearing about “mophato wa malekantwa” which directly translates to war testers.

I was a black child so they rejected me. Their anger towards me was very intense, failing to understand the simple concept that, they do not know I was born that way just from the day I was received into this earth. Oh yes! It is my colour, a black coloured child and please be my guest to call me a “black child” atleast this time I do not really mind and you know why?

I am an African child. The daughter who was born and raised in the low land of this earthly soil.

Like loam soil, she portrays the characteristics of being rich in colour and her texture is thick and vibrant. If I told you that the sun is at fault for darkening my skin, I would be lying. I would further drug you with lies if I cautioned you to not look at me.

I said yes to Him and my life has never been the same since that day. I can still remember the day like it was yesterday. At first I hesitated but He never gave up on me. Today I am one of the happiest ladies living. My life has never been the same since I said yes to Him and life changed instantly. It was like everything took a new turn in a blink of an eye. The thing that moved me about Him was the sincerity of his love towards me. I did not know Him then but somehow I was assured that He is the one that I want to spend the rest of my life loving.Certainly, there is something unique about Him and His ways.

It is somehow stitched in our minds that as a child growing up in a family that prays and goes to church almost every Sunday makes one Christian. Maybe it would if we were born saved. It had never occurred to me that there will come a point where I had to make a decision to follow Jesus, one my mother couldn’t make for me.

Just before my 26th birthday, people started to nudge me about “the next stage in life” (i.e. marriage and children), implying that this would be my ultimate stamp of womanhood. The problem? I had my reservations. Why? Well, I guess this is what happens when you grow up seeing most of your female role-models sell themselves short or stay in abusive situations due to factors such as tradition, control and low self-worth.
